INTENDED USE Specimen transport medium are special media formulated to preserve a specimen and minimize bacterial overgrowth from the time of collection to the time it is received at the place of inspection to be processed. Depending on the type of organisms suspected in the sample, transport media may vary. However in general, specimen transport media are classified on the basis of physical state as semi solid and liquid and also in basis of their utility as bacterial or viral transport media. Specimen transport media contains only buffers and salt instead of containing any nutritional ingredients such as carbon, nitrogen, and organic growth factors so as to prevent microbial multiplication. The sample is then analyzed for the presence of organisms or other clinical markers for disease. The product is used to transport specimens for the bacteriological and molecular assays for bacteria, viruses and parasites. FA Transport Medium (FTM) System is intended for the collection and transport of clinical specimens containing viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasma or ureaplasma from the collection site to the testing laboratory. This is a single-use device.
SUMMARY AND EXPLANATION One of the routine procedures in the diagnosis of infections caused by viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasma or ureaplasma involves the collection and safe transportation of biological samples. This can be accomplished using the FA Transport Medium (FTM) System. FTM System includes a universal transporting medium that is room temperature stable, hence the designation RT, which can sustain viability (and infectivity) of a plurality of organisms that include clinically important viruses, chlamydiae, mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas during transit to the testing laboratory. The formulation FTM includes antibiotics to minimize bacterial and fungal contamination, and inorganic phosphate buffer and sodium chloride with a reduced environment. FTM is provided with labeled screw-cap tubes designed for transport of the clinical sample. This system is also supplied as a sample collection kit that comprises a package which contains one screw-cap tube of FTM and a peel pouch incorporating one or two sterile specimen collection swabs. A range of FTM sample collection kits are available which incorporate different types of shaft swabs which facilitate the collection of specimens from different sites of the patient as described below in the Directions for Use section. Once a swab sample is collected it should be placed immediately into the transport tube where it comes into contact with transport medium. Swab specimens for virus, chlamydia, mycoplasma and ureaplasma isolation should be submitted to the laboratory as quickly as possible after collection.

PRODUCT DETERIORATION FTM should not be used if (1) there is evidence of damage or contamination to the product (2) there is evidence of leakage (3) the color of the medium has changed from light orange-red (4) the expiration date has passed (5) the swab pouch is open, or (6) there are other signs of deterioration.
